Daily recap

The USA is back in prime time. Win and the summer keeps going.

France, Norway, and host Mexico all punched tickets to the Round of 16 on Tuesday, with Kylian Mbappe pulling level with Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland scoring yet again. Today it is the Americans' turn: the USMNT faces Bosnia and Herzegovina in a prime-time knockout on home soil, with England and Belgium also playing to survive.

TL;DR:Tuesday was chalk in the Round of 32. France beat Sweden 3-0 (Mbappé scored twice and is now tied with Messi for the Golden Boot lead), Norway edged Ivory Coast 2-1 (Haaland again, of course), and host Mexico beat Ecuador 2-0 at the Azteca. Today (July 1): England vs. DR Congo at 12 p.m. ET, Belgium vs. Senegal at 4 p.m. ET, and USA vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina at 8 p.m. ET, on Fox or FS1 and Telemundo.

Who won yesterday's World Cup games?

Tuesday was a good day to be the favorite. All three of them advanced, and two of them made a little history on the way through.

France 3, Sweden 0 · East Rutherford

France is the loaded team that makes a knockout game look like a walk to the mailbox. Kylian Mbappé scored on either side of a Bradley Barcola goal, and Michael Olise set up his fifth of the tournament, the most assists by anyone at a single World Cup since 1994. Mbappé now has six goals, level with Messi for the lead, and set a record for goals in World Cup knockout games. France gets Paraguay next, the team that just bounced Germany.

Norway 2, Ivory Coast 1 · Arlington

We told you Haaland was a cheat code. Antonio Nusa curled Norway ahead, Amad Diallo answered with a solo goal worth the price of the ticket, and then Haaland won it the least glamorous way a superstar can: a tap-in from two feet out. Derrick Henry does not care whether it is a 60-yard run or a quarterback sneak, and Haaland has now scored in each of his first three World Cup games. Points are points.

Mexico 2, Ecuador 0 · Mexico City

The host handled its scariest night on paper by never letting it get scary. Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez both scored in the first half, and the Azteca took it from there. Ecuador had not conceded two goals in a single game in two years. Mexico did it in 45 minutes. Co-hosts roll on.

Who plays today? (July 1, 2026)

Three win-or-go-home games, and the last one is the one your whole group chat will be watching.

England vs. DR Congo, 12 p.m. ET on Fox and Telemundo. Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta. England and Harry Kane are heavy favorites; DR Congo is the longshot that keeps crashing the party. Your lunch-break game.

Belgium vs. Senegal, 4 p.m. ETon FS1 and Telemundo. Lumen Field, Seattle. Belgium's aging golden generation against one of the fastest teams in the field. Senegal wants a track meet.

USA vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina, 8 p.m. ETon Fox and Telemundo. Levi's Stadium, Santa Clara. Home team, prime time. The nightcap and the must-watch.

What's the must-watch game today?

USA vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina, 8 p.m. ET. If you watch one game all summer, make it this one. It is the home team in a World Cup knockout, in prime time, with the whole country finally paying attention. In NFL terms, the USMNT is the higher seed hosting a playoff game, and the building will sound like it.

Here is the fun part. The Americans won their group the easy way, 4-1 over Paraguay and 2-0 over Australia, then rested everyone and dropped a meaningless finale to Türkiye. Christian Pulisic has played all of 77 minutes so far because Mauricio Pochettino has been managing him like a closer, saving him for the game that matters. Tonight he points to the bullpen. Captain America is expected to start, and a U.S. attack that put up eight group-stage goals is rested and loaded.

Bosnia is not here by accident. This is the team that knocked Italy out in qualifying, so giant-killer is already on the résumé. Captain Edin Dzeko, at 40, is the crafty veteran quarterback still reading defenses better than the kids: a last-ride Peyton Manning who can still find the soft spot. The catch for both teams is that nobody here can defend. Bosnia has conceded in all six World Cup games it has ever played; the USA has kept one clean sheet in its last 11. Two defenses held together with duct tape and good intentions. Bet the over.

The USA is favored and at home, and it should win. But the upset path is obvious: let this get loose and end-to-end, and Bosnia has the strikers to make you pay. We broke down the full Round of 32 bracket on the GameDay School YouTube channel, so you know exactly what to yell about at kickoff.
