Daily recap

The group stage is a distant memory. Now it's survive or go home.

Egypt got its first knockout win in program history on a Mohamed Salah trick shot, Colombia squeezed past Ghana on one early goal, and Argentina needed extra time and an own goal to shake off the World Cup's scrappiest Cinderella. The Round of 32 is finally, mercifully over. Today the Round of 16 opens with Canada chasing history against Morocco, then Kylian Mbappe's red-hot France walks into a buzzsaw named Paraguay.

TL;DR: Friday wrapped the Round of 32: Egypt beat Australia 1-1 (4-2 on penalties) for its first-ever World Cup knockout win, Colombia beat Ghana 1-0 on a Jhon Arias goal, and Argentina outlasted Cape Verde 3-2 in extra time on a 111th-minute own goal. Today (July 4) the Round of 16 kicks off: Canada vs. Morocco at 1 p.m. ET in Houston, then Paraguay vs. France at 5 p.m. ET in Philadelphia, both on Fox and Telemundo.

Who won yesterday's World Cup games?

Three knockout games, one of them a coin flip in cleats, and a whole lot of penalty-kick drama to close out the Round of 32.

Egypt 1, Australia 1 (Egypt win 4-2 on penalties) · Arlington

Emam Ashour headed Egypt in front in the 13th minute, then Mohamed Hany turned the ball into his own net early in the second half, becoming the first player at this World Cup with two own goals in one tournament. Extra time settled nothing, so it came down to spot kicks. Harry Souttar blazed Australia's first attempt over the bar, Lucas Harrington rattled the crossbar on his, and Mohamed Salah strolled up and casually chipped a panenka down the middle like he was putting a golf ball two feet from the cup. Hossam Abdelmaguid buried the winner. It was Egypt's first knockout win in World Cup history, and it happened because their captain treated a penalty shootout like batting practice.

Colombia 1, Ghana 0 · Kansas City

Jhon Arias one-timed a Luis Suárez cross into the bottom corner in the 14th minute, and that was the entire game. Suárez had only just come on for an injured Jhon Córdoba, so the sub made an instant impact, the soccer version of a pinch hitter delivering a first-pitch double. Ghana never got a shot on target the rest of the way. Colombia advances to face Switzerland in Vancouver.

Argentina 3, Cape Verde 2, AET · Miami Gardens

Lionel Messi opened the scoring in the 29th minute, his 20th career World Cup goal, extending a record nobody else is within shouting distance of. Cape Verde, an island nation of roughly half a million people playing in its first-ever World Cup, answered through Deroy Duarte in the 59th to send it to extra time. Lisandro Martínez put Argentina back in front, and just when it looked settled, Cape Verde's Sidny Lopes Cabral ripped in a stunner to tie it 2-2 again. It took a Diney Borges own goal in the 111th minute to finally end it. Think a 16-seed pushing the overall 1-seed to overtime and only losing because the ball bounced off their own player. Cape Verde's tournament is over, but nobody who watched that game will forget it.

Who plays today? (July 4, 2026)

Just two games today, the new normal for the Round of 16: one match at 1 p.m. ET, one at prime time, every day through July 7.

Canada vs. Morocco, 1 p.m. ET on Fox and Telemundo. NRG Stadium, Houston. Canada is chasing the deepest World Cup run in program history. Morocco is the -135 favorite off a shootout win over the Netherlands.

Paraguay vs. France, 5 p.m. ET on Fox and Telemundo. Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia. The most dangerous attack left in the tournament against the feel-good story of the summer.

What's the must-watch game today?

Paraguay vs. France, 5 p.m. ET.France has been the best team in this World Cup, full stop. Kylian Mbappé scored twice in a 3-0 demolition of Sweden, with Michael Olise pulling strings all afternoon, and France still has not looked uncomfortable for a single half. Paraguay, meanwhile, is playing with house money. The Paraguayans knocked out Germany on penalties in the Round of 32, a result so shocking it triggered an actual national holiday back home. That is the college-football equivalent of a small program knocking off a blue blood in the opening round and then getting handed the defending champs in the very next game.

The honest upset math: France has the deeper roster, the hotter striker, and zero visible weaknesses so far. Paraguay has emotion, a goalkeeper playing out of his mind, and absolutely nothing to lose. Vegas and common sense both say France wins this comfortably. But Germany felt that way too, right up until it did not.
