Daily recap

Brazil's earliest exit since 1990. England survived on ten men. Now the USA gets its turn.

Erling Haaland needed exactly eleven minutes to end Brazil's tournament, and England needed ten men and every last nerve to survive Estadio Azteca. Both quarterfinal spots from Sunday are filled, and Norway is waiting for England in Miami. Today the Round of 16 wraps up with an Iberian derby in Dallas, then the game the whole country has circled: the United States against Belgium in Seattle, with a trip to the quarterfinals, and a lot of unkind history, on the line.

TL;DR: Norway shocked five-time champion Brazil 2-1 on a stunning Erling Haaland brace in the final 11 minutes, and England survived Estadio Azteca 3-2 against Mexico despite playing more than 40 minutes with 10 men. Today (July 6) Portugal faces Spain at 3 p.m. ET in Dallas, then the USA takes on Belgium at 8 p.m. ET in Seattle, chasing its first World Cup quarterfinal since 2002, both on Fox and Telemundo.

Who won yesterday's World Cup games?

Two Round of 16 games, and both of them needed extra nerve just to get through them.

Norway 2, Brazil 1 · East Rutherford, N.J.

For 78 minutes this looked headed for penalties, mostly because Norway goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland stoned a first-half Bruno Guimarães penalty and refused to budge after that. Then Haaland remembered he is Haaland: a header in the 79th minute, a left-footed finish in the 90th, and Norway had its first-ever World Cup quarterfinal. Neymar's stoppage-time penalty was Brazil's only goal, the soccer equivalent of a backup quarterback throwing a garbage-time touchdown down 21. Brazil is out in the round of 16, its earliest exit since 1990, and Haaland now has seven goals this tournament, tied with Mbappé and Messi atop the Golden Boot race. Norway plays England in Miami on Saturday.

England 3, Mexico 2 · Mexico City

Delayed an hour by a thunderstorm, and still the wildest match of the round. Jude Bellingham scored twice in 98 seconds (36th and 38th minutes) to stun a crowd of more than 80,000, Julián Quiñones pulled one back before halftime, and England defender Jarell Quansah then got sent off in the 54th minute for a high challenge. Harry Kane made it 3-1 from the penalty spot, but Raúl Jiménez answered with a penalty of his own to make it 3-2 with 20 minutes left. England spent the rest of the game playing prevent defense a man down, like an NFL team nursing a one-score lead with its backup left tackle in, and held on anyway. First team ever to beat Mexico at Azteca in World Cup play. England gets Norway and Erling Haaland next.

Who plays today? (July 6, 2026)

The Round of 16 finishes today with one afternoon window and one prime-time window.

Portugal vs. Spain, 3 p.m. ETon Fox and Telemundo. AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas. An Iberian derby with a knockout game attached, which is its own kind of chaos.

USA vs. Belgium, 8 p.m. ET on Fox and Telemundo. Lumen Field, Seattle. The co-hosts try to reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 2002, against the one team that has owned them for nearly a century.

What's the must-watch game today?

USA vs. Belgium, 8 p.m. ET. Start with the history, because it is almost comically bad: the USA beat Belgium 3-0 back in 1930, and Belgium has won every single meeting since, six straight, including a 5-2 beatdown in a March friendly in Atlanta. If this were an NFL rivalry, Belgium would be that one division opponent who lives rent-free in your head for no good reason.

The USA under Mauricio Pochettino wants to press Belgium's back line into mistakes and hit them in transition, with Christian Pulisic, 89 caps deep, as the guy who turns a turnover into three points. Belgium's whole plan still runs through Kevin De Bruyne, basically a 35-year-old franchise quarterback: a step slower than his prime, but still capable of one perfect throw that wins the game by itself. The honest upset math: Belgium is older and slower than the version that has haunted the USA for a decade, and the USA is fitter, faster, and playing at home. History says Belgium. The tape says this is the year that changes. We broke down exactly how Pochettino's press is supposed to work on the GameDay School YouTube channel, so you know what to watch for beyond the scoreboard.
