Daily recap

Day 1 is done. Day 2 is the one.

Mexico opened the World Cup with chaos, red cards, and a win. South Korea staged a comeback. Today the USA and Canada both kick off -- and neither game is a gimme.

TL;DR: Mexico beat South Africa 2-0 in a chaotic opener full of red cards, and South Korea rallied past Czechia 2-1 in the other Day 1 game. Today (June 12): Canada vs. Bosnia-Herzegovina at 3 p.m. ET and USA vs. Paraguay at 9 p.m. ET, both on Fox and Telemundo.

Who won yesterday's World Cup games?

Day 1 delivered exactly what opening days promise: chaos, goals, and enough drama to make you explain soccer to your coworkers on Friday morning whether they asked or not.

Mexico 2, South Africa 0 — Estadio Azteca

Julián Quiñones scored in the 9th minute to open the tournament, and Raúl Jiménez sealed it in the second half. Clean scoreline, absolute dumpster fire of a game. Think of it like a team winning 24-7 in the NFL but the box score has an asterisk that says “also three people got thrown out.” South Africa had two players sent off — Sphephelo Sithole for a professional foul on a breakaway, and Themba Zwane for unsporting behavior — and Mexico's own César Montes got a red for serious foul play. Three red cards. In a World Cup opener. At the Azteca. If you're surprised, you have not been paying attention. Mexico did Mexico things: loud, gorgeous, slightly unhinged, and just chaotic enough to make you question reality before walking away with three points.

South Korea 2, Czechia 1 — Estadio Akron

This one was the better watch. Czechia's Ladislav scored in the 59th minute and the stadium briefly became a Czechia highlight reel. Then South Korea said “cool goal, here's two of ours” — Hwang In-Beom tied it and Oh Hyeon-Gyu finished the comeback. Think Bills-Chiefs energy: the team you didn't come in rooting for has you on your feet by the fourth quarter. South Korea was the crowd favorite in the neutral sections, and now you know why people keep telling you soccer is better live.

Who plays today? (June 12, 2026)

Friday has two games. Cancel your plans. Both are worth it.

Canada vs. Bosnia-Herzegovina — 3 p.m. ETon Fox and Telemundo. BMO Field, Toronto. Canada is playing its first World Cup match on home soil since 1986. The last time they did this, the Oilers were a dynasty and nobody owned a cell phone. They've never won a World Cup game. Today they get their best shot.

USA vs. Paraguay — 9 p.m. ETon Fox and Telemundo. SoFi Stadium, Los Angeles. The USMNT opens against a Paraguay side that went unbeaten in eight straight matches, beat Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay in qualifying, and absolutely does not care that you've never heard of them. Do not sleep on this game.

What's the must-watch game today?

USA vs. Paraguay is your 9 p.m. game. The US is the home team that got in automatically as a host — think AFC top seed, first-round bye. Christian Pulisic is their Patrick Mahomes: takes over games solo, but needs his supporting cast to show up. The crowd at SoFi will be deafening. But Paraguay is the 5-seed that's been cooking — wins over Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay in qualifying, which is the South American equivalent of three road wins in January. Their star Julio Enciso is injured and may sit, but they run a suffocating defensive scheme that makes better teams look confused. Think 2022 Giants upsetting the Vikings on the road. USA should win. The Titanic should have missed the iceberg. Watch anyway.

The earlier match — Canada vs. Bosnia— is also genuinely compelling. Jonathan David (39 international goals, Juventus) leads Canada, who have kept six clean sheets in eight matches. Bosnia eliminated Italy on penalties to get here. Clear your schedule for both.

What channel are today's World Cup games on?

Both matches are on Fox and Telemundo. Streaming: Fox Sports app and Peacock. Check the How-to-Watch cheat sheet for every option, or grab a streaming pass here.
