Daily recap

Monday had ZERO winning teams. Today has Messi, Mbappé, and Haaland.

Four World Cup matches on June 15. Four draws. Spain had 27 shots and couldn’t score against Cape Verde. Today the three most famous players on Earth all play their opening match.

TL;DR: Monday gave us four games and zero winners: Spain 0-0 Cabo Verde (biggest shock of the tournament so far), Belgium 1-1 Egypt, Saudi Arabia 1-1 Uruguay, and Iran 2-2 New Zealand in a wild late-night classic. Today (June 16): France vs. Senegal at 3 p.m. ET, Iraq vs. Norway at 6 p.m. ET, and Argentina vs. Algeria at 9 p.m. ET, all on Fox and Telemundo.

Who won yesterday's World Cup games?

Nobody. Literally nobody. June 15 went four-for-four on draws, which has never happened on a single World Cup match day before. South American teams combined for zero wins from four attempts. Spain had 27 shots. Cape Verde had their goalkeeper and the audacity to use him. It's fine. Everything is fine.

Spain 0, Cabo Verde 0 — Group H

This is the soccer equivalent of the Kansas City Chiefs driving to the red zone twelve times and coming away with zero touchdowns. Spain, the reigning European champions, controlled the ball, created chance after chance, got 27 shots off, and scored exactly none of them. Cabo Verde goalkeeper João Costa played the game of his life, and a nation of 560,000 people held one of the tournament favorites to a scoreless draw in their first-ever World Cup match. Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams, Rodri: all present, all completely baffled. Cape Verde did Cape Verde things, parked the bus, kept the faith, and pulled off one of the more absurd results in World Cup history. Spain's 734 passes without a goal will be used in soccer lectures for decades.

Belgium 1, Egypt 1 — Group G

Egypt struck first through Emam Ashour in the 19th minute, which is the sports equivalent of a 12-seed getting red-hot from three in the opening five minutes of a March Madness game. Belgium looked rattled, pushed forward, and eventually got level when Egypt's Mohamed Hany put the ball in his own net in the 66th minute. Kevin De Bruyne was everywhere. Mohamed Salah was dangerous every time he touched the ball. Neither side found a winner, and both golden generations leave Seattle with one point and a whole lot of explaining to do.

Saudi Arabia 1, Uruguay 1 — Group H

Abdulrahman Al-Amri opened the scoring for Saudi Arabia, and Maxi Araújo equalized for Uruguay. Darwin Núñez was physical and relentless and somehow couldn't quite finish. Uruguay is built like a defense-first NFL squad, the kind that goes 11-6 on field goals, controls the clock, and makes the playoffs by not losing. They don't blow you out; they grind until something breaks their way. One point from this opener is completely fine for Uruguay.

Iran 2, New Zealand 2 — Group G

Save this one for the highlight reel. Ramin Rezaeian scored for Iran, New Zealand's Elijah Just equalized, Mohammad Mohebbi put Iran back in front, and then Just scored again to make it the best individual performance of the tournament so far. Just became the first New Zealand player ever to score multiple goals at a World Cup. Rezaeian also became the first Iranian player to score at two different World Cups. This was technically a 2-2 draw but it felt like a six-goal thriller. SoFi Stadium was absolutely unhinged at midnight.

Who plays today? (June 16, 2026)

Tuesday is the day the tournament woke up and said “okay, now let's get serious.” Three matches. Three superstars making their 2026 World Cup debut.

France vs. Senegal — 3 p.m. ETon Fox and Telemundo. MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey. Kylian Mbappé's first World Cup match as France's captain. Senegal beat France in the 2002 opener in one of the greatest World Cup upsets ever. History is watching.

Iraq vs. Norway — 6 p.m. ETon Fox and Telemundo. Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, Massachusetts. Erling Haaland's World Cup debut. The man scored 54 goals in a single Premier League season. Norway has never advanced past the group stage. No pressure, Erling.

Argentina vs. Algeria — 9 p.m. ET on Fox and Telemundo. Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri. Lionel Messi. Defending world champion. Playing his likely final World Cup. Algeria has nothing to lose and a coach who loves making favorites miserable. More on this one below.

What's the must-watch game today?

Argentina vs. Algeria at 9 p.m. ET. It's not even close.

Here is the NFL analogy: Tom Brady is coming back for one final Super Bowl run. He is 38, he already won the championship, and his first playoff game is against a team nobody picked to be there. That is what tonight is. Messi is 38. He won the World Cup in 2022 in the greatest final ever played. He is playing his last World Cup with the defending champions, in a stadium in Kansas City where the crowd will be enormous, against an Algeria team that qualified through Africa's brutal group stage and absolutely does not care about reputations.

Algeria is coached by Vladimir Petković, who took Switzerland to the 2020 Euro quarterfinals and knocked out France along the way. He builds organized, compact, counterattacking teams. Think Bill Belichick, but for soccer, but Algerian. That is genuinely the worst possible stylistic matchup for a team that wants to control possession and slowly create chances.

Argentina's supporting cast is real: Rodrigo De Paul covers every blade of grass in midfield (think a linebacker who also calls the plays), Lautaro Martínez is a top-five striker on the planet, and Ángel Di María, if he can stay healthy, is still dangerous. But every eye at Arrowhead will follow Messi from the first whistle. We covered Messi's road to the 2022 title on the Game Day School YouTube channel — watch it before tonight so you know exactly what's at stake.
