Daily recap

Mexico punched the first ticket, Canada threw a party. Today: the USA can clinch.

Thursday belonged to the host nations: Mexico became the first team into the knockout round and Canada won a World Cup game for the first time ever, by six. Today the third co-host takes the stage, and a win sends the USA through.

TL;DR:On June 18, Mexico beat South Korea 1-0 on a Luis Romo goal to become the first team to clinch a spot in the knockout round, Canada hammered Qatar 6-0 (a Jonathan David hat-trick) for its first-ever men's World Cup win, Switzerland beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1, and Czechia drew South Africa 1-1. Today (June 19): the USA hosts Australia at 3 p.m. ET on Fox in Seattle with a knockout spot on the line, plus Scotland vs. Morocco at 6 p.m. ET, Brazil vs. Haiti at 8:30 p.m. ET, and Türkiye vs. Paraguay at 11:30 p.m. ET.

Who won yesterday's World Cup games?

Thursday was host-nation day, and two of the three home teams stole the show. One snuck through a tense 1-0 and booked the tournament's first knockout ticket. The other turned a group game into a tailgate and won by six. If you only had time for the box scores, you missed the fun.

Mexico 1, South Korea 0 — Estadio Akron, Guadalajara

Mexico did the grown-up thing. South Korea, led by captain Son Heung-min, came in dangerous and made El Tri sweat, but the night turned on one scramble: a Mexico cross, a fumble by the South Korea keeper, and Luis Romo poking the loose ball into a wide-open net. That was the whole ballgame. With the win, Mexico became the first team in the entire tournament to clinch a spot in the knockout round and grabbed control of Group A. Think of it as the team that locks up a playoff berth in Week 2 while everyone else is still doing math. Not flashy, just first.

Canada 6, Qatar 0 — BC Place, Vancouver

And then there was Canada. The co-hosts had never actually won a men's World Cup game in their history, so naturally they picked Thursday to win one by six. Jonathan David scored a hat-trick, Cyle Larin and Nathan Saliba chipped in, and Qatar helped with an own goal while having two players sent off, which left them finishing the night a man or two short. It was the soccer version of a backup-quarterback game getting out of hand: 35-0 by the third quarter, starters on the bench, everybody eating. The one sour note was an injury to midfielder Ismaël Koné. Otherwise, a full-on home-crowd block party.

The other two: Switzerland 4, Bosnia 1 and Czechia 1, South Africa 1

Switzerland did the very Swiss thing of quietly putting up four and beating Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1, the kind of efficient afternoon that nobody outside Zurich circles on the calendar and that somehow ends 11-6 every season. And Czechia and South Africa played to a 1-1 draw, with Michal Sadilek putting Czechia ahead before Teboho Mokoena answered from the penalty spot to earn South Africa a hard-fought point. A late equalizer that felt, for Bafana Bafana, like stealing a road win.

Who plays today? (June 19, 2026)

Four games, and the one you actually care about is first. Groups C and D play their second round of fixtures, and the headliner is the USA on home soil to open the day.

USA vs. Australia — 3 p.m. ET on Fox and Telemundo. Lumen Field, Seattle. The USA beat Paraguay 4-1 in their opener, and a win here clinches a knockout-round spot. The whole day starts with the home team trying to punch its ticket. We break it down below.

Scotland vs. Morocco — 6 p.m. ET on Fox and Telemundo. Gillette Stadium, Foxborough. Scotland can clinch its own knockout spot with a win over a favored Morocco side that drew Brazil. The plucky underdog with a shot at the playoffs in the late-afternoon window.

Brazil vs. Haiti — 8:30 p.m. ET on FS1 and Telemundo. Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia. Brazil, held to a 1-1 draw by Morocco in the opener, is expected to handle World Cup debutant Haiti. The marquee name in prime time.

Türkiye vs. Paraguay — 11:30 p.m. ETon FS1 and Telemundo. Levi's Stadium, Santa Clara. Two teams that lost their openers in a late-night must-win, and Paraguay is the team the USA already beat, so the American result hangs over this one too.

What's the must-watch game today?

USA vs. Australia, 3 p.m. ET. The third host nation is back, and unlike Mexico and Canada, the Americans can clinch a knockout spot today.

Here is the setup in NFL terms: the USA is the home team sitting at 1-0 after a dominant opener, and a win today is a clinched playoff berth in Week 2. They smoked Paraguay 4-1, with Folarin Balogun scoring twice (the first American with two goals in a single World Cup match since 1930) and Gio Reyna curling in a highlight-reel third. Balogun is the big-bodied No. 1 wide receiver who wins jump balls; Reyna is the shifty slot guy who makes the impossible look routine. Seattle will be loud, and loud is the USA's whole offense.

Australia, the Socceroos, is the disciplined, physical opponent that does not beat itself, the AFC North defense of this group: not pretty, but they will hit you and make you earn every yard. The upset risk is real if the USA gets sloppy and lets Australia turn it into a rock fight. But with a home crowd, a healthy attack, and a knockout berth dangling in front of them, the USA should have enough. A win and they are through. Watch this one from kickoff.

We broke down exactly how the USA can clinch today, and why Balogun has suddenly turned into the striker America has been waiting two decades for, on the GameDay School YouTube channel. Watch it before kickoff so you know who to keep your eyes on.
