Daily recap
A teenager ran the show in Atlanta. Today: Messi takes the field.
Sunday belonged to Spain's 18-year-old, to a chain of islands that refuses to lose, and to Egypt finally getting on the board. Today the biggest name in the sport shows up for work, with Argentina, France, and Norway all back in action.
TL;DR: On June 21, Spain dismantled Saudi Arabia 4-0 in Atlanta as 18-year-old Lamine Yamal scored his first World Cup goal and Mikel Oyarzabal added a quick brace. Cabo Verde stunned Uruguay again with a 2-2 draw, Belgium and Iran ground out a scoreless 0-0, and Egypt picked up their first win of the tournament, beating New Zealand 3-1. Today (June 22): Argentina vs. Austria kicks off at 1 p.m. ET on Fox, followed by France vs. Iraq at 5 p.m. ET, Norway vs. Senegal at 8 p.m. ET, and Jordan vs. Algeria at 11 p.m. ET.
Who won yesterday's World Cup games?
Sunday had a little of everything: a teenage prodigy putting on a clinic, an island nation that apparently did not get the memo that it is supposed to lose, a goalless slog that only a defensive coordinator could love, and a team finally breaking through for its first win. Here is how it shook out.
Spain 4, Saudi Arabia 0 — Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta
This one was over by halftime, which is the polite way of saying Spain treated it like a Tuesday walkthrough. Lamine Yamal, who is 18 and somehow already the most dangerous player on the field every time he laces up, opened the scoring in the 10th minute for his first-ever World Cup goal. Then Mikel Oyarzabal scored twice in three minutes, and an own goal early in the second half just piled on. Picture a No. 1 overall draft pick dropping 40 in his playoff debut while the veterans handle the boring stuff. Spain bounced back from a sleepy opening draw and now look every bit the title contender everyone keeps warning you about.
Uruguay 2, Cabo Verde 2 — Hard Rock Stadium, Miami
Cabo Verde is a chain of islands with fewer people than Cleveland, and they are quietly becoming the best story of the tournament. They already gave Spain a scare, and on Sunday they walked into Miami and refused to lose to gritty, grizzled Uruguay, holding on for a 2-2 draw. This is the 16-seed not just hanging with the 1-seed but trading baskets down the stretch. Uruguay is the kind of veteran outfit nobody wants to draw, and Cabo Verde made them sweat anyway. Bookmark these guys.
The undercard: Belgium 0, Iran 0 and Egypt 3, New Zealand 1
Belgium's golden generation is older, more expensive, and on Sunday, completely stuck. Iran did what Iran does: parked everybody behind the ball, dared Belgium to break them down, and walked away with a 0-0 draw and a very annoyed opponent. That is the soccer version of a defense that gives up zero points by playing a deep two-shell all afternoon. Over in the other Group G game, Egypt finally got rolling, beating New Zealand 3-1 for their first win of the tournament. New Zealand grinds, but Egypt had the firepower up top, and three goals is three goals.
Who plays today? (June 22, 2026)
Monday is a heavyweight Monday. Four games, an early kickoff for the lunch crowd, and a West Coast nightcap to close it out.
Argentina vs. Austria — 1 p.m. ETon Fox and Telemundo. AT&T Stadium, Dallas. The reigning World Cup champions and Lionel Messi, very possibly in his last tournament, against a disciplined Austria side. The marquee name of the day. We break it down below.
France vs. Iraq — 5 p.m. ET on Fox and Telemundo. Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia. France is loaded with superstars and one of the favorites to lift the trophy. Iraq is the underdog hoping to keep it close and frustrate them. France should win, but soccer enjoys a banana peel.
Norway vs. Senegal — 8 p.m. ET on Fox and Telemundo. MetLife Stadium, New York/New Jersey. Honestly the best game-quality matchup of the day. Norway brings Erling Haaland, a 6-foot-5 striker who scores goals like it is a glitch in the game, against Senegal, one of the most athletic and dangerous teams in the field. Must scroll, prime-time TV.
Jordan vs. Algeria — 11 p.m. ETon FS1 and Telemundo. Levi's Stadium, San Francisco Bay Area. The nightcap, for the West Coast crowd and the night owls. Algeria has the bigger names; Jordan is here to spoil the party.
What's the must-watch game today?
Argentina vs. Austria, 1 p.m. ET. It is the biggest brand on the board, and the reason is three letters: M, S, I. Lionel Messi is the greatest player most of us will ever watch, he is the reigning champion, and at 38 he is running out of tournaments. When the GOAT shows up, you show up.
Here is the matchup in NFL terms. Argentina is the defending Super Bowl champion still led by the legendary 38-year-old quarterback: a little older, a little slower, but capable of one flick that ends your season. Messi does not run all over the field anymore. He walks, he watches, and then he detonates. Austria is the well-coached, physical, no-nonsense opponent that does everything right and is desperate to be the team that knocks off the champ. Think of a tough division rival that grinds you into the fourth quarter and waits for you to blink.
The honest read: Argentina has more talent at nearly every position and should win, because that is what reigning champions usually do. But Austria is organized and stubborn, and if Messi has a quiet day, Argentina can look ordinary. Watch how much room Austria gives him in the middle of the field. Give Messi a few feet of space and a half-second of time, and it is over. Crowd him all afternoon and you have got yourself a nervy one.
We broke down why a 38-year-old who barely runs is still the most dangerous man on the field, and how an underdog actually game-plans to beat a superstar, over on the GameDay School YouTube channel. Watch it before kickoff so you know exactly what you're looking at.
