Offside
Neutral-zone infraction
No camping behind the defense. Judged when the pass is kicked, not caught — that's how goals get erased.
Yellow card
Personal foul, on your record
A formal warning that follows you. Collect two and you're ejected — and your team can't replace you.
Red card
Targeting ejection
Straight ejection. Your team plays 10 v 11 the rest of the game. One red card can decide a World Cup.
Stoppage time
The clock never stops
The ref adds the wasted minutes at the end. “+5” means roughly five. The vibes decide.
Penalty kick
Untimed down from the 2
One shooter, one keeper, 12 yards. Scores about 75% of the time. Awarded for fouls in the box.
Free kick
Rehearsed special-teams play
Spot foul. The wall lines up 10 yards back and everyone prays. About a third of all goals start here.
Handball
Illegal touching
Arms are off-limits. Shoulder is fine, hand is a crime — and in the box it becomes a penalty kick.
Corner kick
Red-zone special teams
Ball goes out off the defense over their own end line. Everyone tall sprints into the box.
VAR
Replay review
New York reviews it, somehow slower. Only for goals, penalties, red cards, and mistaken identity.
Quick hits
No timeouts. None. — coaches can't stop the game. Momentum is real, and there's no icing the kicker.
Ties are normal — group games can end level. Knockouts go to extra time, then a shootout.
Advantage = the swallowed whistle — if the foul would help the fouler, the ref waves “play on” and circles back for the card.
Extra time ≠ overtime — two full 15-minute periods, no sudden death. Still tied? Penalties. Chaos.
Why the clock counts UP
90 minutes, counted up, never stopped. The ref quietly tracks the wasted time and tacks it on at the end. It's the trust-fall of timekeeping — and it works.
