The Phrasebook

Speak soccer

Ten terms you'll hear in every broadcast — translated to plain American.

They sayWe'd sayUse it like
Pitch
The field
“Great ball in from the right side of the pitch.” It's grass. It's a field.
Kit
The uniform
Jersey + shorts + socks. A nice one is “a clean kit.” Yes, grown men discuss this.
Nil
Zero
Say “two-nil,” never “two to nothing.” This one word is 80% of sounding fluent.
Brace
A two-TD game
One player, two goals. “Mbappé bagged a brace.”
Hat trick
Three scores, same guy
Three goals, one player, one game. The crowd throws nothing, disappointingly.
Clean sheet
A shutout
The keeper's stat. “Three clean sheets this tournament” = nobody's scored on him.
Derby
A rivalry game
Pronounced DAR-bee. Two teams that genuinely hate each other, ideally neighbors.
Friendly
A preseason game
An exhibition. Nothing at stake, which has never once stopped anyone from getting hurt in one.
Equalizer
The game-tying score
The goal that levels it. Usually arrives 30 seconds after you said “this one's over.”
Own goal
A pick-six you threw yourself
Scoring on your own net. The loneliest moment in sports.

Quick hits

“Soccer” is British — it's their own slang for “asSOCiation football.” They coined it, exported it, then blamed us for it.
Match, not game — and it's a “fixture” before it's played. Don't ask why.
Supporters, not fans — being a supporter is a lifestyle with chants, scarves, and opinions about kits.
The table = the standings — “top of the table” is first place. “Bottom of the table” comes with real consequences.

Pronunciation insurance

DAR-bee (derby) · em-bap-PAY (Mbappé) · HOL-und (Haaland). Nail those three and you can bluff everything else.
