The clock counts up?
Ninety minutes, counted upward, never stopped — not for injuries, not for goals, not for anything. It’s the trust-fall of timekeeping, and somehow it works.
The setup
An NFL game has a clock that stops constantly — incompletions, players going out of bounds, the two-minute warning, replay reviews, eleven commercial breaks. Soccer looked at all of that and went the exact opposite direction: the clock starts at 0:00, runs to 90:00, and never stops. Not for injuries. Not for substitutions. Not for the keeper taking his sweet time on a goal kick.
So how does wasted time get paid back?
The referee quietly tracks every wasted minute — injuries, subs, celebrations, time-wasting — and tacks it onto the end of each half. That’s stoppage time: when the board goes up showing “+5”, it means roughly five more minutes. Roughly. The vibes decide.
American translation: imagine if instead of stopping the clock for an injury, the ref just remembered it and added it back at the end of the quarter. That’s the whole system. One guy’s wristwatch and his word.
Why it’s actually great
- No timeouts. None. Coaches can’t stop the game. Momentum is real, and there is no icing the kicker.
- A game takes two hours, every time. Kickoff at noon, done by two. No four-hour overtime marathons eating your whole Sunday.
- Stoppage time is built-in drama. Everyone knows the game ends “around” the 90th minute — so a goal in the 94th feels like a walk-off and a Hail Mary at once.
The one thing to bank
When you see “90+4” on the screen, nothing is broken. The game went past 90 because the ref is paying back the wasted time — and the moment he’s satisfied, he blows the whistle, wherever the ball is. That’s it. You now understand soccer’s clock better than the guy who’s been watching for nine years.
