Daily recap

Two comebacks and a red card. Now Ronaldo meets Modric.

Harry Kane rescued England, Belgium erased a two-goal deficit to stun Senegal in extra time, and a 10-man USA held off Bosnia to reach the Round of 16. Today the bracket hands us a farewell tour: Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, meets Luka Modric, 40, when Portugal play Croatia, with Spain and Switzerland also chasing spots in the last 16.

TL;DR: Wednesday was comeback day in the Round of 32. Harry Kane scored twice late as England beat DR Congo 2-1, Belgium erased a 2-0 deficit to beat Senegal 3-2 in extra time, and the USA won 2-0 over Bosnia and Herzegovina despite playing an hour a man down. Today (July 2): Spain vs. Austria at 3 p.m. ET, Portugal vs. Croatia at 7 p.m. ET, and Switzerland vs. Algeria at 11 p.m. ET, on Fox, FS1, and Telemundo.

Who won yesterday's World Cup games?

Wednesday did not do anything the easy way. Every game had a lead change, a collapse, or an ejection.

England 2, DR Congo 1 · Atlanta

England spent an hour looking like a team that believed its own press clippings. DR Congo did not get the memo. Brian Cipenga slipped in behind the defense in the 7th minute, beat Jordan Pickford, and suddenly the longshot led the giant. Then Harry Kane remembered he is Harry Kane. He headed one in with 15 minutes left, then rifled home the winner in the 86th. Kane is the closer you bring on when the save gets scary, and England needed every bit of him. They get co-host Mexico next in the Round of 16.

Belgium 3, Senegal 2 (a.e.t.) · Seattle

Senegal built a 2-0 lead through Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr and looked like the faster, hungrier team. Then Belgium ran the oldest play in sports: the prevent defense that only prevents you from winning. Romelu Lukaku pulled one back in the 86th, Youri Tielemans tied it in the 89th, and after two hours of stress Tielemans won it in the fifth minute of extra-time stoppage. Belgium's golden generation signed up for one more playoff run and survived. USA fans should watch the tape, because Belgium is next.

USA 2, Bosnia and Herzegovina 0 · Santa Clara

Folarin Balogun scored his third goal of the tournament, and for about an hour he was the hero. Then a video review caught him raking his studs down a defender's leg, and the referee sent him off. Hero to the showers in one sitting, like a starting pitcher who throws six shutout innings and then gets tossed for arguing balls and strikes. The USMNT played the last half-hour with 10 men and did not blink. Malik Tillman curled in a gorgeous free kick in the 81st, and the home side held on for a 2-0 win, only the second knockout-round win in U.S. World Cup history. The catch: Balogun is suspended for the next one, which just happens to be Belgium.

Who plays today? (July 2, 2026)

Three more win-or-go-home games, and the 7 p.m. one is a bucket-list matchup.

Spain vs. Austria, 3 p.m. ET on Fox and Telemundo. SoFi Stadium, Inglewood. Spain has not conceded a goal all tournament and won its group without breaking a sweat. Austria presses like the rent is due.

Portugal vs. Croatia, 7 p.m. ET on Fox and Telemundo. BMO Field, Toronto. Cristiano Ronaldo against Luka Modric, probably for the last time on this stage. Cancel your dinner plans.

Switzerland vs. Algeria, 11 p.m. ET on FS1 and Telemundo. BC Place, Vancouver. The nightcap for the West Coast and the insomniacs.

What's the must-watch game today?

Portugal vs. Croatia, 7 p.m. ET. This is the one. It is Ronaldo, 41 years old and still the biggest name in the sport, against Modric, 40 and still the best passer on the field. Picture Tom Brady and Peyton Manning meeting in the playoffs, except both are somehow still starting and everyone knows it is the last time. A farewell tour with a scoreboard.

Portugal is the more talented team top to bottom. Ronaldo already made history this tournament as the first player to score at six different World Cups, and the roster around him is deep enough to win the whole thing. In NFL terms they are the No. 2 seed with the stacked depth chart and the legend still taking snaps.

Croatia is the problem nobody wants in the bracket. This is the team that reached the 2018 final and took third in 2022, and they do it the same way every time: Modric runs the game like a point guard who already knows where everyone will be, and they drag you into extra time until you crack. They are the 12-seed that is secretly a 3-seed. The upset math is simple. If this reaches penalties, Croatia has been there a hundred times and Portugal's heart rate goes up. What time is Portugal vs. Croatia today?

Portugal vs. Croatia kicks off at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT on Thursday, July 2 at BMO Field in Toronto, on Fox and Telemundo. It is a knockout, so the winner reaches the Round of 16 and the loser is done.

Did the USA win their World Cup game?

Yes. The USA beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 on July 1 to reach the Round of 16, even after Folarin Balogun was sent off just past the hour. Balogun and Malik Tillman scored. Balogun is suspended for the next game, against Belgium.

Is this Ronaldo's last World Cup?

Almost certainly. Ronaldo is 41 and has signaled this is likely his last World Cup, which is a big reason Portugal vs. Croatia feels like an event. Croatia's Luka Modric, 40, is in the same farewell boat, so today is likely the final time these two legends share a knockout stage.
