Daily recap

The USA punched its ticket. Today: the European heavyweights are back.

Friday went exactly the way the home crowd wanted: the USA beat Australia and clinched a spot in the knockout round, while Brazil finally looked like Brazil. Today the tournament hands the mic to Europe, with Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden all back in action.

TL;DR:On June 19, the USA beat Australia 2-0 in Seattle to clinch a spot in the knockout round (even without injured captain Christian Pulisic), Brazil finally woke up and rolled Haiti 3-0 on a Matheus Cunha brace, Morocco edged Scotland 1-0, and Paraguay stunned Türkiye 1-0 with a goal in the opening minute. Today (June 20): Netherlands vs. Sweden at 1 p.m. ET on Fox kicks off a four-game slate, with Germany vs. Ivory Coast at 4 p.m. ET, Ecuador vs. Curaçao at 8 p.m. ET, and Tunisia vs. Japan at midnight ET.

Who won yesterday's World Cup games?

Friday was the day the third host nation got to celebrate, and the USA did not waste it. Throw in a Brazil side that finally remembered it was Brazil and two early goals that basically ended their games before the popcorn was done, and Day 9 had a little bit of everything.

USA 2, Australia 0 — Lumen Field, Seattle

The Americans took care of business and clinched a knockout-round spot, and they did it the unglamorous way: an own goal and a header. In the 11th minute, Folarin Balogun whipped in a cross so dangerous that Australia defender Cameron Burgess turned it into his own net, which is the soccer equivalent of a punt returner muffing the catch in his own end zone. Then right before halftime, Alex Freeman headed home a rebound off a deflected Sergiño Dest shot. It got flagged offside, sat through a VAR review longer than a Thanksgiving replay challenge, and stood. The wild part: the USA did all of this without captain Christian Pulisic, out with a calf injury. Backup steps in, team doesn't miss a beat, playoff berth secured. We will take it.

Brazil 3, Haiti 0 — Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia

After a sleepy 1-1 draw with Morocco to open, Brazil needed to look scary again, and they obliged. Matheus Cunha scored twice in the first half (23rd and 36th minute), Vinícius Júnior added a third in first-half stoppage time, and the Seleção cruised. This was the preseason-favorite finally hitting on the deep ball after a boring Week 1: same roster, same talent, suddenly everything clicks. Haiti, a World Cup debutant just happy to be dancing in Philly, never had an answer.

The early birds: Morocco 1, Scotland 0 and Paraguay 1, Türkiye 0

Both of these games were basically decided before anyone found their seats. Morocco struck early through Ismael Saibari and then did what good defensive teams do, sat on the lead and dared Scotland to break them down, which Scotland could not. Over in the nightcap, Paraguay scored inside the first minute through Matías Galarza and then turned the rest of the match into a defensive clinic to stun Türkiye. Two 1-0 results, two early haymakers, two teams happy to play rope-a-dope for 89 minutes. And remember: Paraguay is the team the USA already beat 4-1, so seeing them grind out a win actually makes the American opener look even better.

Who plays today? (June 20, 2026)

Groups E and F take center stage for their second round of fixtures, and Europe's big names are all on the marquee. Four games, starting nice and early.

Netherlands vs. Sweden — 1 p.m. ETon Fox and Telemundo. NRG Stadium, Houston. The Dutch are one of the most talented rosters in the whole bracket and want to lock up their group early. Sweden is the dangerous wild card. The day's opener and a sneaky good one.

Germany vs. Ivory Coast — 4 p.m. ETon Fox and Telemundo. BMO Field, Toronto. The four-time champions against a fast, athletic Ivory Coast side. The biggest brand name on today's board. We break it down below.

Ecuador vs. Curaçao — 8 p.m. ETon FS1 and Telemundo. Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City. Curaçao is the smallest nation ever to make a World Cup (population around 150,000, roughly a mid-size American suburb), and every minute they play is history. Ecuador is the heavy favorite.

Tunisia vs. Japan — midnight ET on FS1 and Telemundo. Estadio BBVA, Monterrey. A late-night puzzle: Japan is quick and organized, Tunisia is stubborn. One for the true believers and the West Coast crowd.

What's the must-watch game today?

Germany vs. Ivory Coast, 4 p.m. ET. It is the heavyweight name of the day, and Germany is the kind of program that treats the World Cup the way Alabama treats the College Football Playoff: they expect to be there, and they expect to win.

Here is the matchup in NFL terms. Germany is the perennial-contender franchise with a deep, disciplined roster: not always the flashiest, but they execute, they convert in the red zone, and they almost never beat themselves. Think of a buttoned-up offense that just methodically moves the chains until you crack. Ivory Coast is the explosive, athletic underdog built on speed, the team with the track-star receivers who can flip a game with one big play. If the Ivorians can turn this into a track meet, they have the legs to spring an upset.

The honest read: Germany should control the tempo and grind out the win, because their whole identity is refusing to let games get chaotic. But Ivory Coast's speed is real, and if Germany gets sloppy or casual, this is exactly the kind of game that turns into a stunner. Tune in at kickoff, because the first 20 minutes will tell you which movie you're watching.

We broke down how Germany's machine-like style actually works, and why American fans should not sleep on Ivory Coast's speed, over on the GameDay School YouTube channel. Watch it before kickoff so you know exactly who to keep your eyes on.
